Getting In Shape The Right Way

Written by admin on Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 in Self-Improvement.

There are many people that are looking for quick fixes in every aspect of their lives. This is not the optimum approach, more often than not, especially when it has to do with getting fit. In order for someone to get fit, it is best to do so gradually.

Having said that, it isn’t impossible to lose weight fast. There are many products and diets that can help you along the way. The problem with these are not the actual system, but what happens once you have reached those goals. Many just continue to live their lives the same way they did before they began their track to lose this weight. Therefore, if you want to succeed, you have to be smart about it.

It doesn’t matter which particular system you choose to shed those extra pounds. They have all been effective to some degree, and continue to be. The only difference is having the willpower afterward. That’s where most people end up failing. As soon as they finish a diet or the novelty is gone, they often return to their old habits, quickly gaining back the weight they have worked so hard to lose.

So, an exercise regime is recommended. It could be in the form of a team sports or something similar to that. Golf is a wonderful way to give you lots of exercise, and is great for any age and any level of fitness. You can even try to learn how to break 80 by following some good advice and making you even more interested in the game.

Or, perhaps you prefer weightlifting exercises. This is a great way to burn fat and maintain your weight. You can do this at home or by becoming a member at a gym close to your home or your workplace. At home, it can be more convenient and less expensive. Of course, you will have to purchase the equipment, but you’ll be saving money on the membership fees, which could add up.

Equipment to purchase for your home is simply an investment. The same can be said about other appliances that help to make it more comfortable, such as home space heaters. Not only do they provide comfort, they also provide plenty of savings. While you can still benefit from a comfortable environment, you can do so without spending more energy, so you are saving money.

Let’s face it, we all need to cut a few corners here and there in order to make it in this expensive world we live in. If you do the calculations properly, you’ll see that there are plenty of products out there that can help you achieve all your goals.

Anti-Aging Tips For A Longer Life

Written by admin on Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 in Self-Improvement.

There is a hype going on around the world that involves anti-aging. While some may misunderstand this subject, believing it has only to do with beauty, they could not be further from the truth. The fact is that anti-aging has to do with healthier living that will fight premature aging, maintain overall health and reduce the risk of developing illnesses.

Having said that, you will have to take a look at your diet. That is simply because your diet affects the organs, the skin and your general health. Maintaining the proper weight for your height is also a goal that must be reached because it has a direct impact on health concerns.

If you must, then lose weight fast with some particular diet of your choice and then try to maintain it by changing your eating and living habits. That will require plenty of willpower, however, as we are set in our ways.

Along with diet, you will have to start some kind of exercise. Not only will it help you stay healthy and fit, it will help you to keep those extra pounds away. Some illnesses and conditions are directly related to being overweight, so run or walk or find another exercise that you are interested in. Perhaps golf could be the answer. It’s an interesting game that keeps the player constantly striving to improve. One of your goals could be learning how to break 80 and doing it.

Another interesting fact about golf is that anyone can play. Regardless of your age or physical condition, golf can be enjoyed by all because it only involves walking. Plus, you’ll get the necessary vitamins from the sun.

Then you must look to ways that can make you happy. Find ways that stress can be removed. If your job is causing you stress with too much responsibility and wasted time in commuting, perhaps a career change should be considered. And, the career change can come at any point in your life, no matter how old or young you may be. One great opportunity we have is making a living online.

You can make money online in various ways and never have to deal with the stress that is associated with commuting, dealing with difficult employers and supervisors, etc. Living longer and better takes a commitment and may require some huge changes, but in the end, it is well worth it.

Why Are There Consequences of Low Self Esteem

Written by admin on Monday, March 8th, 2010 in Self-Improvement.

“Young children typically base their self-esteem primarily on the feedback they receive from others, with the parents exercising the greatest impact,” states a recent newsletter from the National Association for Self-Esteem. “After age four, they begin to consider their competence at different activities. By age seven, children typically base their self-esteem on three domains: academic success, social acceptance and physical prowess. As they enter adolescence, they shift from the importance of feedback from parents to feedback from peers. At this age, their level of self-esteem is normally based upon six domains or contingencies: inherited endowments, social acceptance, feeling unique and worthy of respect, feeling in control of one’s life, moral virtue or integrity, and one’s accomplishments, including academic success. How one appears to others, athletic prowess, and popularity become particularly important at this age, though these are all external sources for self-esteem.” Unfortunately, low self esteem has all sorts of devastating consequences for society, thus illuminating the need for more programs centered on how to build self confidence.

Rampant materialism is a consequence of low self esteem for some Americans. A study published in the Journal of Consumer Research found that low self-esteem actually caused increased materialism (“Growing Up In a Material World,” Chaplin & John, December 2007). They added that the converse was also true — that increasing self-esteem could decrease materialism. After studying different cohorts, Chaplin and John found that adolescents were generally building self-esteem from 8-13, but experiencing low esteem from 13-18 as they transitioned into young adulthood. “By the time children reach early adolescence, and experience a decline in self-esteem, the stage is set for the use of material possessions as a coping strategy for feelings of low self-worth,” they conclude. “By priming high self-esteem, we reversed the large drop in self-esteem experienced by early adolescents, thereby reducing the steep rise in materialism among this group.”

The National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center estimates that 30% of all American youth are involved in bullying — either as a victim or a perpetrator. Contrary to popular belief, they say bullies tend to be confident, with overly positive self esteem. In fact, those who are victims of bullying are more likely to have low self esteem, feel like “outsiders,” suffer from anxiety, be physically weaker, lack social skills and feel socially isolated. Once bullied, many of these kids still need to develop self esteem years down the road. The aggressive bullies carry with them a hot-headedness and impulsiveness into adulthood. They’re more likely to do poorly in school, fight, drink, smoke and come from families where the parents provide little emotional support or guidance. One study found that 60% of those characterized as bullies in grades 6-9 had at least one criminal conviction by age 24. Many psychologists advocate that programs be built into schools that teach ways to improve self esteem, which will help potential targets assert themselves better and enrich students’ lives with positive ways to feel good without hurting others.

Approximately 8% of all Americans suffer from some sort of eating disorder. Of those people, 100% suffer from low self esteem. For people with eating disorders, researcher HC Steinhausen states, “A profile of self-concept components that are characteristic of low self-esteem are insecurity, negative mood and depression, poor body image, feelings of inadequacy, social and personal withdrawal, poor adaptation skills and unrealistically high aspirations.” Anorexics and bulimics often begin to suffer from poor esteem as they go through puberty and their bodies change. Life transitions to new schools, new social peer groups, new work-loads and increased stress can also have devastating effects on young men and women. People with eating disorders generally see physical manipulation of their bodies as a means to happiness and the curing of all their problems, much like people who become addicted to plastic surgery.

Do Things You Love To Reinvigorate Your Life

Written by admin on Monday, March 8th, 2010 in Self-Improvement.

Keeping dreams alive once you are older and have responsibilities to take care becomes harder. The more responsibilities you have the harder it seems possible to keep your true passions apart of your life. Although it may be more difficult to do the things you love while taking care of your responsibilities, you can still do it, regardless of what phase you are in your life.

Your dreams may appear in bright colors in your mind, but you see the road to achieving these dreams in dull black and white images. The process that involves capturing your dreams and translating them into reality may seem thorny. This is a normal part of the process, and as the cliche goes, no pain – no gain.

If you find yourself in a position at work that seems not to be going anywhere quick, you may want to take action on pushing yourself forward in your career. This action may involve sacrifices on your time and money. These temporary sacrifices are made with the eventual aim of getting a better job with more personal challenge and better pay. These are the long term effects of your short term sacrifices.

Have you been thinking about turning your passion into a profession? Maybe your personal training skills are good enough to start your own business? Whatever your passion may be, if you want to transform it into something more than a hobby there are many things to consider. Arm yourself with the tools of success in order to ensure the realization of your dream.

If you are looking to reinvigorate your life on the personal level, find out what it is you really need in your life. Maybe you still have some doubts about why you broke up with your boyfriend/girlfriend. If you are having doubts about your decision you may be in the get ex back mode. If so, proceed with caution!

Maybe you are trying to change your outward appearance. A new phase in your life may call for a new look. You may be feeling a little adventurous and want to wear something a little outside of your style with those women’s brown boots that are trendy this season. Or, if you are a guy you may be thinking about how pink (the new black) can work its way into your wardrobe.

It is usually about the simple things that you do that inject your life with energy. These energy bursts may be used to improve your life. Only if you dare too.

Your Self Esteem Improvement

Written by admin on Monday, March 8th, 2010 in Self-Improvement.

Helen Keller once said, “Self-pity is our worst enemy, and if we yield to it, we can never do anything wise in the world.” If you’re one of the millions of people who suffer from low self-esteem, then you may find it hard to get out of your rut for a number of reasons. Learning how to improve your self esteem might require more than simply reading a self-help book or starting a new hobby. When you’re trying to overcome a bad childhood, gang involvement, substance abuse or obesity, you may need to go through a program to strengthen your confidence and lift your spirits in a meaningful way.

Researchers are looking into how to improve your self esteem if you are a minority coming from an urban, low-income family. Statistics indicate that low self esteem among this cohort often leads to gang participation, drug abuse, violence, poor school performance, underage pregnancy or crime. Researchers from Northwestern University, Loyola University Chicago and Walden University found that emphasizing ethnic pride was one of the best ways to improve self esteem among seventh and eighth graders. “These findings imply that ethnic pride is important to African American adolescents’ mental health for other reasons than it simply makes them feel better about themselves as individuals,” explains the study’s lead author Jelani Mandara of Northwestern University. “The findings also imply that ethnic pride may be as important as self-esteem to the mental health of African American adolescents. Parents, schools and therapists should expose young people to material and environments that help foster a sense of ethnic pride.”

Figuring out how to improve your self esteem should not be done alone if you have suffered with drug or alcohol abuse. In a 2006 study published in BMC Psychiatry, researchers John-Kåre Vederhus and Øistein Kristensen studied 114 patients — 59 with alcohol dependency and 55 with multiple drug dependencies who started self help programs after addiction treatment. Two years later, 38% of the patients still regularly participated in positive self esteem programs. Researchers discovered that 81% of those participating in building esteem programs had been abstinent for the past 6 months, compared to 26% of non-participants. There are many different types of successful programs available, from the community-based Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous to luxury resort-style facilities like The Rose (for women) and The Landing (for men) in Newport Beach, California.

No matter what your background may be, you can learn how to improve your self esteem through therapy, group programs, books and workshops. Taking steps to improve self-esteem will set off a ripple effect of good in your life. You will notice that your interpersonal relationships improve, you become better skilled at your hobbies, your time management improves and you sleep better at night. You will find more joy in everyday life if you commit to developing self esteem and finding your self-worth. Remember, regardless of where you’ve come from, having a positive self image is the essential foundation for a fruitful and satisfying life. Improve self-esteem today to make you a better person tomorrow.

How To Improve Self Esteem In Kids

Written by admin on Monday, March 8th, 2010 in Self-Improvement.

Throughout our lives, we are continually maintaining and improving self esteem. It’s easy to feel good about ourselves when we are getting married, receiving accolades at work, moving into a new home or meeting our fitness goals. Yet our self-confidence may be challenged with the death of a loved one, the dissolution of a relationship, the loss of a job or a serious illness. Experts say the foundation of our ability to keep positive self esteem throughout our lives is formed during our childhood. So, as a parent, it is your responsibility to lay the groundwork for your child’s healthy and happy development. While acceptance of your teachings is ultimately up to the child, here are a few tips on improving self esteem in your child.

Positive encouragement is one of the best ways to build self esteem in your child. Celebrate the small victories with your child when he or she gets an “A” on a test or wins an award at school. Perhaps you’ll go out for ice cream, buy a special present or hold a small party for the important milestones in your little one’s life. Children can be very sensitive and receptive to their parents’ feedback, says the Nemours Foundation, so it is important to praise your child when he or she has demonstrated significant effort — even if the end result is not success. It is important that parents don’t lie to the child and over-inflate each success, yet parents should always provide honest, consistent and encouraging feedback.

In improving self esteem, you must sometimes catch and correct the inaccurate beliefs your child has. It is essential that you listen to what your child is saying very carefully and correct any falsehoods or negativity immediately before a patterned way of thinking develops. For instance, your child may say, “I failed this test; I am a failure!” It is then your opportunity to step in and say, “You are not a failure, honey. Everybody fails sometimes. We can work on the hard parts so you do better next time. Practice makes perfect!” Another method is the inquisitive approach, where you encourage the child to reassess his or her statements as a way of building esteem. You might ask, “What makes you feel like you are a failure? How did you do on the last test you took? How are you doing in your other subjects? What questions did you get right on the test? What would you do differently next time to prevent a low score?” Your children will have healthier self concepts if you help them set realistic standards in evaluating their performances.

There are many ways to improve self esteem in children. It’s a good idea to expose your child to as many activities as possible — whether it’s a sports team, an art club, music lessons, karate, dance classes, horseback riding, writer’s camp, acting school, a church youth group or volunteer work. A child who develops different interests is generally a child who recognizes his or her talents and possesses high esteem. Be sure to show your support by attending to recitals, games, award ceremonies and special events. Your presence works wonders in improving self esteem. You may also want to participate in special projects as a family — be it a hike, a family drawing, a special website or a board game night. Spending time bonding at home with the family is the best way to encourage your child and prepare him or her for whatever lies ahead.

How Important is Improving Your Self Esteem For

Written by admin on Monday, March 8th, 2010 in Self-Improvement.

Psychologists say we first develop self esteem (or lack thereof) as children. We strive to be unconditionally loved, accepted, praised and nurtured by our parents. When those ends are met, we are confident and feel good about ourselves, as we unravel a greater awareness of our special talents and strengths. If we are denied this love and acceptance, then we anxiously wonder what is wrong with us, feel as though we are not worthy of love and find it increasingly difficult to relate to others in social settings. In some cases, children do not begin to feel a decrease in self esteem until their confidence is shaken at school, in relationships or in other realms outside the home. Regardless of your past history, maintaining or improving your self esteem should be your focus for a number of critical reasons.

Improving and building esteem leads to so many thoughts, feelings and actions that are beneficial to your life. When you have high esteem, you feel worthy of happiness, love and respect. You will find it easier to make and achieve goals, state your desires and values, and obtain lasting happiness when you are self confident. When you communicate with others, you will be able to state your thoughts in an intelligent manner, without breaking down into a power struggle or falling silent out for fear of rejection. When mistakes and unforeseen circumstances come your way, you will stand tall in the face of adversity and seek ways to prevent future missteps. You will be a kinder person who does not cut others down, berate, criticize or act out of jealousy. You will have a sense of control when problem-solving, you will assume responsibility for your actions and you will find that the expression of your person gives you a reason to live. You will see your strengths, gravitate toward healthy relationships and enjoy excellent mental health. The importance of self esteem is plain to see: it is the key to all happiness.

Improving your self esteem is critical because it helps you present yourself as a balanced, well-rounded person who attracts more goodness and positive results in life. It may take some time to build and improve self esteem, but if you set your mind to it, you can certainly make progress. By contrast, if you have low self-esteem, you do not value your own opinions or ideas so you may be hesitant to speak up or you may come across as being always negative, which will make some people want to avoid you. You feel others are better than you and tend to act out of jealousy at times. Conversely, in an attempt to increase self esteem, there are some people who have overly high self-esteem. They may have unrealistic views of them self and feel superior to those around them. They engage in self-indulgent behavior and lose friends by putting them down all the time. Truly, the best path is to have healthy, balanced self-esteem, where you have an accurate perception of yourself and you work to overcome your flaws, while inviting the respect of others around you, who wish to be your friend because you are a positive force in their lives.

Improving your self esteem is especially important when it comes to relationships. It’s safe to say that most everyone has experienced some sort of disappointment within a close relationship, whether it’s premature dissolution of bonds, being lied to, suffering a cheating partner, experiencing jealousy, feeling rejected or being the victim of emotional/physical violence. These trials and tribulations of dating can scar a person and lead to what’s called “baggage.” It’s common for people to jump from relationship to relationship to fill the void created following a break up. However, unless a person focuses on creating positive self esteem first, he or she may unknowingly commit self-sabotaging behaviors or bring unfair prejudices into the new relationship. Power struggles, jealousies, violence, overly controlling behavior, argumentativeness, paranoia and depression are all evidence of low self esteem issues that must be corrected before a love life can progress healthily.
